 Marvel Comics (then Atlas Comics).
 Known as "Solver of the Supernatural," he was a hardboiled 

private investigator 
who specialized in solving paranormal and macabre mysteries

Backstory: Rex Lane failed his physical exam to become a police officer

 so his fiancée, Belle, encouraged him to open his own private detective agency.
